If you just need to grab a few HTML tags, there are tons of websites to turn to. But when it comes to actually teaching coding—with an appreciation for design aesthetics—pickings are more slim.
Over at HOW U, we’re putting together interactive web design classes for experienced graphic designers making the move to the web—including a PSD to HTML class in the coming months! In the meantime, here are our six favorite free online resources for self-directed code learning:
- Don’t Fear the Internet: An awesome designer-centric video series from Jessica Hische and Russ Maschmeyer.
- Tutsplus: 30 Days to Learn HTML and CSS: A video series that explains how to code for the web in bite-size chunks.
- Treehouse: Web Design: Very similar to the Tutsplus series in content, this video series also lets you earn badges a la Foursquare.
- Code Year: Sign up for this free service, and you’ll get a weekly email with a link to an interactive tutorial to learn JavaScript coding. (New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is among the nearly 300,000 people signed up.)
- w3schools: The tutorials here are more bare-bones (no audio or video)—but the site is an excellent reference for tags.
- Google Code University: Most of the material here is more for programmers than designers, but it’s still a really solid collection of resources.
Very nice resources, never knew about tutplus until now, it seems they have pretty good tutorials!
