Sometimes a “normal” layout simply won’t accommodate the needs of a site. I’d actually argue that this project celebrating the Golden Gate Bridge would be a total flop if it had gone with a safe standard website layout. Sometimes it really pays to break the rules, as this awesome, extremely usable site demonstrates.
