HOW is pleased to announce it will be selecting a 2014-2015 board of advisors soon. In the meantime, please take a look at some of the people who have been instrumental in the success of the HOW brand.

Meet HOW’s past Board of Advisors:

Joshua Chen
Joshua C. Chen is founder, principal and creative director of San Francisco-based Chen Design Associates (CDA), which seeks clients who value a high level of design, who use the earth’s resources responsibly and who passionately create quality products and services that enhance people’s lives. CDA’s work has been recognized by A&E Television Network, ReBrand 100, The ADDY Awards, AIGA, American Graphic Design Awards, California Design Biennial, Communication Arts, Graphis, HOW and Print, among others. Most recently the studio was featured in “San Francisco Graphic Design,” a first-ever graphic design exhibit at the SF Museum of Craft + Design curated by Michael Osborne, showcasing 13 of San Francisco’s most influential designers. CDA clients include The North Face, Pottery Barn, Chronicle Books, SFMOMA, University of California Berkeley, EMI Capitol Records and Stanford Lively Arts.

Andy Epstein
An in-house designer since 1992, Andy Epstein created and grew in-house design teams for Commonwealth Toy and Gund, as well as restructured and expanded the 100-person creative team at Bristol-Myers-Squibb. He currently works at Designer Greetings, leading an in-house design team that develops the company’s greeting card and gift wrap product lines. Andy has written extensively on in-house issues and is the co-founder of InSource, an association dedicated to providing support to in-house designers and design team managers. He’s the head of the AIGA task force on in-house design and is currently writing a book to be published by HOW Books.

Jeff Fisher
Jeff Fisher, author of Identity Crisis! (HOW Books, 2007), is the engineer of creative identity for the Portland-based firm Jeff Fisher LogoMotives. A 30-year design veteran, he has been honored with over 600 regional, national and international design awards and is featured in over 100 books about logos, the design business, and small business marketing. His first book, The Savvy Designer’s Guide to Success was released in 2004 and has been reissued as a PDF on CD. Fisher is currently writing a new volume, with the working title of Logo•Type, on the topic of typography in identity design.

Jeni Herberger
As a nationally-recognized speaker and corporate trainer, Jeni leverages over 20 years of experience within the design industry to provide clients with practical strategies on “doing business better”. Jim Krause
Jim Krause has worked as a designer/illustrator/photographer in the Pacific Northwest since the 1980s. He’s produced award-winning work for clients large and small and is the author and creator of 11 titles available from HOW Books: Idea Index, Layout Index, Color Index, Color Index 2, Design Basics Index, Photo Idea Index, Photo Idea Index: Places, Photo Idea Index: Things, Photo Idea Index: People, Type Idea Index and Creative Sparks.

Cameron Moll
Co-author of CSS Mastery and author of Mobile Web Design, Cameron Moll creates meaningful web interfaces that harmonize utility and presentation. Experienced in web and graphic design, his work or advice has been featured by Forrester Research, Communication Arts, HOW, Print, National Public Radio (NPR), and many others. He is the recipient of the HOW In-House Design award (2009), and .net magazine recently named him one of the top 20 web designers in the world. Cameron is the founder and principal of Cameron Moll LLC and Authentic Jobs Inc, a targeted job board for web, creative, and design professionals. Cameron resides in central Florida with his wife Suzanne and four sons.

Jennifer Visocky O’Grady
Jennifer Visocky O’Grady has the best job(s) in the world, and she knows it. Her theory is, when you’re happy, you’re productive. As such, she is the co-author of The Information Design Handbook and A Designer’s Research Manual. The work of her design studio, Enspace,  has been featured in dozens of magazines and books; she’s been privileged to judge design competitions and present workshops and lectures (usually with her swell husband and creative partner Ken Visocky O’Grady). Jennifer has served in a number of leadership positions including president of AIGA Cleveland, advisor to the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario, and faculty senator at Cleveland State University, where she is an associate professor.

Ken Visocky O’Grady

Ken Visocky O’Grady believes that great design is a crucial tool that makes lives better, and he’s out to prove it. Whether it’s through his work as an associate professor at Kent State University; the two books he’s co-authored, The Information Design Handbook, and A Designer’s Research Manual; his many appearances as a panelist, speaker or juror across the continent; or the recognition he’s earned from peers and publications, Ken proves daily that visual communication goes far beyond pretty pictures. Ken has been a member of the AIGA National Education Steering Committee, an advisor to the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario, and a director for AIGA Cleveland.

Derek Sussner

Derek is president of Sussner Design Co., a Minneapolis graphic design
firm firmly planted since 1999. Sussner Design Company’s work has been
recognized by the Advertising Federation of Minnesota’s “The Show”,
